· What are the Humps Used for?
Camel humps are not used for storing water.
Contrary to popular myths, camels store fat in their humps, not water. The fat reserves are built up when food sources are plentiful and can be converted to energy when food is scarce. The hump(s) deflate when the fat reserves are low.
Also, by concentrating fat in humps and not across the body, camels can stay cooler and survive in hot climates.
